THE ELWOOD L. THOMAS AMERICAN INN OF COURT — SEEKING APPLICATIONS —

The Elwood L. Thomas Inn of Court is seeking applications for both new and seasoned attorneys for the 2018-2019 Inn year, which corresponds with the academic calendar year at the University of Missouri School of Law.

An application form is attached. Please return completed forms electronically to Elwood.L.Thomas.Inn@gmail.com not later than May 23, 2018.

The Elwood L. Thomas Inn was formed during the last decade by judges from the Missouri Supreme Court, a judge from the Eighth Circuit, trial judges from Columbia and Jefferson City, members of the University of Missouri School of Law, and leading trial attorneys from Columbia and Jefferson City.

The Inn is one of 379 charted American Inns of Court in the United States. All American Inns of Court have a mission of inspiring the legal community to advance the rule of law by achieving the highest level of professionalism through example, education, and mentoring.

The Elwood L. Thomas Inn meets approximately once a month during the academic year. The meetings feature meals and engaging programs on litigation and professional responsibility topics that are presented by smaller “pupilage teams” that consist of a mix of judges, senior attorneys, junior attorneys, and law student members of the Inn. Meetings rotate between Columbia, usually at the University of Missouri School of Law, and Jefferson City, sometimes at the Missouri Supreme Court or the U.S. District Courthouse. Pupilage teams are encouraged to meet outside of the monthly meetings on an informal basis.

The first meeting during the 2018-2019 term will be held August 23, 2018 at the Reynolds Alumni Center, and a final banquet and program is traditionally held in mid-April at the same location. There are five Inn meetings between those dates, typically on the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of the month in September, October, November, January, and February or March. The 2018-2019 calendar will be finalized during the summer. Annual dues cover the cost of meals. Most programs qualify for CLE credit.

The Elwood L. Thomas Inn is seeking attorney applicants in the following categories:

 Associates (attorneys with zero to five years of experience), who are members of the Inn for a two-year term. Annual dues are $125.

 Barristers (attorneys with at least five years of experience), who are members of the Inn for a three-year term. Annual dues are $155.

 Masters (attorneys, law professors, and judges with at least 10 years of experience who have demonstrated leadership and excellence in their field), who are admitted without a term limitation, but can be granted emeritus status after five years. Annual dues are $225.

The American Inns of Court system was conceived by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and is modeled on the Inns of Court in England and Ireland. The first American Inn of Court was founded in 1980. For more information see https://home.innsofcourt.org/.
